Western Medicine measures success with cancer based on the five-year survival rate. Meaning was the patient able to live for at least five years after diagnosis. Western Medicine has greater success with some cancers versus others. Generally speaking, the younger the age of adults, the higher the survival rate. Furthermore, women have higher survival rates than men. Western Medicine has come a long way in the treatment of cancer and it will only improve in the future. Particularly, research needs to be done on improving the ability of pharmaceuticals to target cancerous cells without damaging healthy cells. Through the integration of Western & Eastern Medicine, we can maximize results in cancer.

Traditional Chinese Medicine & Cancer

There are three main elements to cancer and tumor development in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). They are 1) Qi and Blood stasis 2) accumulation of Phlegm Damp and or Heat Toxins and 3) deficiency of Vital Qi. So in China treatment often consists of invigorating the blood and transforming blood stasis, clearing heat toxicity and or phlegm dampness, and supporting the Vital Qi.

Generally speaking, treatment should aim at dispelling the cancer in the early and intermediate stages. The patient usually has a good body constitution and their Vital Qi is not deficient in the early stage. As the cancer moves from the intermediate to the late stage, Vital Qi weakens and the focus should be to supplement the body as well as dispelling the cancer. In the later stages of cancer, patients cannot tolerate radiation and chemotherapy since their Vital Qi is so weak. Furthermore, we want to avoid herbs that clear heat/phlegm/dampness and move Qi and Blood because these herbs will be hard on the body at this stage. Rather, we use herbs that are going to build the Qi and Blood in the late stage of cancer. Patients who have had chemotherapy, radiation, and/or surgery will be damaged to some degree even though the tumor has been removed or is brought under control. Our goal should be to provide the body with Vital Qi at this stage.

Surgery, Chemotherapy, Radiation & Chinese Medicine

The use of Acupuncture & Chinese Herbs prior to surgery has great benefits. The use of anesthesia, drugs and surgery itself will damage the Vital Qi of the body. Anesthesia is drying, drugs are toxic, and invasive surgery will leave the body weakened. Acupuncture & Chinese Herbs raises the Vital Qi strengthening the patient’s resistance to infection, enhance immunity, and postoperative rehabilitation. Post operatively, these therapies will speed recovery and help fortify the immune system for any necessary future treatments.

Although chemotherapy kills cancerous cells, it also kills normal healthy cells. It can also be damaging to the digestive system. Nausea, vomiting and poor appetite generally occur when starting chemotherapy. Bone marrow suppression and a decrease in White Blood Cells (WBC) and platelet count occur in the following weeks after beginning chemotherapy. Our primary goal is to build and strengthen the Vital Qi during chemotherapy.

Radiation or Radiotherapy can cause side effects like dry mouth, throat, fever, nausea, poor appetite and fatigue. The toxic side effects of radiation dry up and damage body fluids causing exuberant heat as well as depleting Qi and Blood. Our main focus is to generate body fluid, clear heat and generate Qi and Blood. Chinese Herbs are very effective in clearing heat and generating body fluid. However, exercises and all therapies that relax the body will promote the parasympathetic nervous system, therefore promoting production of fluid in the body.

Chemotherapy, Radiation & Side Effects

The side effects of chemotherapy and radiation are many and toxic. Usually this toxicity manifests into what is called in Chinese Medicine as “toxic heat”. Below is a list of possible side effects that may be experienced during or post treatment. Drugs are often times given to counter the side effects, but they usually in turn cause side effects of there own. Tong Ren Therapy, Acupuncture & Chinese Herbal Therapy can help with these side effects. Let’s examine some of these side effects more closely.

Both chemotherapy and radiation can cause Bone Marrow Suppression which will lead to a decrease in the formation of White Blood Cells (WBC’s). The inability to distinguish from cancerous cells and healthy cells is the fundamental problem of these therapies. Leukocytes, granulocytes and neutrophil make up our WBC’s. When the number of leukocytes fall below a certain level, the condition is called leukopenia. Leukopenia manifests as dizziness, fatigue, poor appetite, frequent colds, pale complexion, palpitations and insomnia. Bone marrow is especially sensitive to radiation. It inhibits bone marrow and destroys granulocytes directly. Bone marrow damage depends on dosage and duration of radiation. Chemotherapy also destroys marrow cells especially granulocytes.

Radiation and chemotherapy can damage Liver Function. Drugs like Methotrexate can cause inflammation of the liver and gallbladder. Methotrexate especially damages the liver when used in long-term administration. Specifically, toxic heat and dryness impair the function of the liver. If the condition is not addressed, digestive problems like nausea, abdominal distension, diarrhea, fatigue, and liver pain will occur. Juandice may occur in some patients. After suspension of drug administration, recovery can take place soon after.

Certain chemotherapy drugs can be toxic to the kidneys causing Renal Damage. Blood in the urine, edema, anemia, fatigue, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, oliguria, polyuria, anuria, and renal failure may occur. Again, toxic heat damaging the blood vessels of the kidneys is the cause.

Radiation can damage the lungs when undergoing chest radiotherapy causing Radiation Pneumonitits. This is most often done for lung, esophageal, breast cancer, and Hodgkins disease. Radiation toxins can cause dry cough, cough with blood, pain in the chest, shortness of breath, and rapid breathing. During infection, there will be fever, cough with greenish-yellowish phlegm.

Chemotherapy can damage the myocardium of the heart causing Cardiotoxicity. The clinical manifestations are palpitations, anxiety, chest pain, oppression in the chest, shortness of breath, and arrhythmia. This is mainly caused by doxorubicin (Adriamycin). In Chinese Medicine, the heart governs blood and lack of heart blood can cause many of the disorders of the heart and spirit.

Cystitis is one of side effects of radiotherapy for cervical, ovarian, bladder, colorectal cancers or malignant tumors in the pelvic region. Radiation damaging the bladder tissues will in turn cause stagnation of urine and heat in the bladder. The clinical manifestations are irritated bladder, frequent urination, urgency, dysuria, and blood in the urine. There can also be pain and aching of the lower abdomen or low back. Radiation damaging the bladder tissues will in turn cause stagnation of urine and heat in the bladder.

Nausea & Vomiting are the most common early side effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. If there is excessive vomiting, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, weakness, and emaciation can occur. Cisplatin, Dacarbazine, Cyclophosphamide, Doxorubicin, and Methotrexate are the most common agents that can result in nausea and vomiting.

Poor Appetite is a common side effect from radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment. Appetite Loss is usually progressive and can be accompanied by abdominal distension and discomfort after eating.

Radiation Proctitis often occurs after radiation therapy in the pelvic region. This includes, but not limited to, Colon, Cervical, Ovarian and Bladder Cancer. The main clinical manifestations are diarrhea, increased bowel frequency, mucus and blood in the stool, tenesmus, and lower abdominal pain.

Dry Mouth & Tongue and Mouth Ulcers are seen after radiotherapy is applied to the head, neck and chest. Radiation will damage the affected area and cause inflammation then producing dryness of the salivary glands. Mouth ulcers can make eating painful therefore reducing appetite. Dysphagia can also occur with radiotherapy in this area.

Hair Loss is a commonly seen when chemotherapy is used and many agents can induce it. Generally, Hair Loss usually occurs on the head only although it can affect body hair as well. A couple of months after finishing treatment, hair growth will occur. Hair color, luster and texture may change. However, Hair Loss from large doses of radiation can impair hair follicles so that growth is not possible.

All of the above side effects can benefit greatly with Tong Ren Therapy, Acupuncture, Tuina and Chinese Herbal Therapy.
