The Healing Process
I finally came to the conclusion that this article needed to be written in order for patients to truly understand how to get the most out of their treatments. Too many patients come in and try acupuncture once and never try it again. Now if you’ve had high blood pressure for many years, you probably need more than one session to get the results you want. Chinese medicine fundamental philosophy is to let the body heal on its own naturally. This Healing Process occurs gradually.
Clients need to be patient and Practitioners need to make sure to educate their clients about the healing process. First, there needs to be some type of prognosis. The more chronic the disease, the longer time needed for healing to occur. However, if you strained your lower back moving boxes last week, 3 t0 6 sessions with rest should suffice. This would be a more acute condition that Acupuncture can help with in a shorter time.
You will know that you’re getting better because the frequency and intensity of your symptoms will decrease. If this is not happening, then you not that it’s not helping you. Ideally, after day 1 of treatment there should be some improvement. This improvement will last longer after each consecutive treatment. So after the second treatment, you should have more improvement of symptoms than after the first treatment and so on and so on. When symptoms are 80%-90% better, then treatments can be decreased or discontinued. The client need only come in for maintenance and tune ups. Just as a car needs to be taken care of, so does your body. Acupuncture, Massage and Reflexology are great ways to keep your body in good shape.
Furthermore, if there are any precipitating factors like stress, bad diet or lack of exercise then those issues need to be addressed. If those issues are not addressed then the treatment course will be longer. Clients must change their lifestyle in order for healing to occur. I always stress the importance of lifestyle in all treatments sessions. We must address your health from a wholistic view to optimize healing time and effectiveness.
