Parkinson’s, Acupuncture, and Tong Ren Therapy

Parkinson’s disease is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system primarily affecting the motor skills of the patient. The classic sign of Parkinson’s is tremors although the patient most likely will also suffer with muscle rigidity, a walking shuffle and generally overall slower movement. Although modern medicine hasn’t quite figured out the cause

of Parkinson’s, there is speculation that the lack of dopamine is causing the tremor’s and other symptoms. When one is relaxed (parasympathetic mode), the brain releases the “feel good” hormones like serotonin, acetycholine and dopamine.Having worked with many Parkinson’s patients, it has become quite evident to me that the more the patient is in paraysmpathetic nervous system mode the better. Acupuncture and Tong Ren Therapy, by promoting relaxation, can be of great benefit for Parkinson’s patients. We don’t calculate the hormone levels, but we know that something is happening because the patient’s notice a big difference in their walking, muscle rigidity and tremors. My current patient initially had tremors in his right leg, left arm and right arm. He showed an obvious shuffle when walking and had muscle rigidity. He complained of poor sleep due to both the disease itself and the meds that he takes for the disease. His energy was also low.

He would come in twice a week and I’ve been seeing him for about 6 weeks. Today, he has no tremors in his right leg, his left arm is about 80% better and even his right arm tremors have lessened. He has much more energy. His muscles feel more relaxed and open and he is walking much better. All this has occurred and we didn’t even use Chinese Herbs. The main techniques employed were Acupuncture, Tong Ren Therapy, Tuina, Reflexology and Guided Relaxation. Relaxing is healing and the more people can understand this, the sooner we’ll be free unnecessary drugs.
