Sound, Brain Waves and Healing

Sound can be a powerful medicine and more people are starting to be aware of the benefits of sound as a tool for healing.  First let’s examine how this is possible.  Sound is a frequency or vibration that is emitted into the environment than can affect us physically, emotionally and mentally.  Sound can be used as a tool to keep us calm and relaxed.  This will keep us in parasympathetic mode which is healing for our bodies and minds.  To better understand how sound affects us, we need to have a deeper understanding of brain waves.  There are 5 types of brain waves.  Each has a different frequency and has a different affect on our physiology.  Check out the table below to better understand how brain waves affect you.

Frequency range Name Usually associated with
> 40 Hertz Gamma waves stress
13-40 Hz Beta waves Attention
7-13 Hz Alpha waves Relaxation
(while staying awake)
4-7 Hz Theta waves (lucid) Dreams, deep meditation
< 4 Hz Delta waves Deep dreamless sleep, coma

So we can see from the above that it is ideal to be in Alpha, Theta, or Delta waves to promote healing.  Not to say the other waves are “bad”.  On the contrary, they are needed in our daily lives.  There are times when you need to be stressed so that you can get out of the situation.  Likewise, you need to aware and attentive when you are in school and being exposed to something new.   However, we must learn to let the mind go and relax.  When this occurs, healing is much easier to accomplish.  We will have recommended CD’s in the future for you to purchase from our site.
